Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason says he is lucky to be alive after fracturing his skull in a horrific clash of heads with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.

Mason was rushed to hospital following the nasty incident in the first half of Hull’s 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on January 22.

The 25-year-old feared the worst before surgery and eventually spent eight days in hospital before being released on Monday.

“It has been an emotional rollercoaster and I feel lucky to be alive, but I’m happy to say I’m now at home resting and recovering,” former Tottenham star Mason said on Tuesday.
“My fiancee and family have read so many messages of support to me over the past week.

“To have had so many people send messages to me, including from fellow players, clubs (in particular the support shown to me from both Hull City and Tottenham Hotspur), so many fans as well as the support I have received from the general public around the world has been completely overwhelming.

“Each and every message of support really has given me strength and I cannot tell you how much it means to me.

“The love and support my Mum, Dad, sisters, fiancee Rachel and all of my friends and family have shown to me during what has been an extremely traumatic time for all involved has been incredible and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart for being there throughout.

“Finally I would like to say a special thank you to all the medical staff at Hull, as well as the medical team at Chelsea and of course the fantastic treatment and support I have received from all of the staff during my stay at St. Mary’s hospital.”

Rap Is Dead In Nigeria, Terry Tha Rapman said, What Do You Guys Think?

16:13 Add Comment

Few hours back, rapper, Yung6ix, caused a stir on social media with his views on rap music in Nigeria. He wrote:

‘When I wanna listen to African rap I play Yung6ix and SA rappers wtf is going on with the Nigerian Rappers ? Wake up’.

In that same spirit, LIB, reached out to a few rappers in the country, to share their thoughts on the state of rap in Nigeria and rapper Terry Tha Rapman, nothing only have so much to say also shares same sentiments with Yung6ix.

In his words:
‘I kinda get where he’s coming from. I’ve been stressing this for long, when I said ‘rap is dead’ in Nigeria I didn’t mean nobody is rapping. I meant we (being the fans, media and promoters) stopped supporting rap music as it should be at a point‘.

He continued:

‘Now would you blame rappers for fine tuning their style? Rappers hardly get the airplay/support as our pop counterparts so after years we started adapting. I still believe there’s hope. We are far from the days of Trybesmen, 2shotz, Ruggedman, Modenine and when MI dropped Talk About It and MI2. We need more rap concerts to promote hip-hop culture. The few ones I’ve been to were not encouraging’.

So guys, what do you think, is rap really dead in Nigeria?

Six killed in ‘terrorist’ attack on Quebec mosque

15:10 Add Comment

L-R: Régis Labeaume Quebec city mayor, Philippe Couillard Quebec prime minister and Martin Coiteux minister of Public Security, hold a press conference following a shooting in a mosque at the Québec City Islamic cultural center in Quebec city on January 30, 2017 Two arrests have been made after five people were reportedly shot dead in an attack on a mosque in Québec City, Canada. PHOTO: Alice Chiche / AFP

Gunmen stormed into a Quebec mosque during evening prayers and opened fire on dozens of worshippers, killing six and wounding eight in what Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned as a “terrorist attack.”

Police arrested the two assailants following the shooting Sunday inside the Islamic Cultural Center in a busy district of Quebec City, police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe said.

She gave no indication of the identities or nationalities of the two suspects.

One witness told Radio Canada that “the two men were wearing black cagoules,” and one of them “had a “strong Quebecois accent.”
Some 50 people were in the mosque when the shooting began at around 7:30 pm on Sunday (0030 GMT Monday) toward the end of evening prayers, Coulombe said.

Several minutes later, police descended on the Saint-Foy district — an area packed with offices and shops some 10 kilometers (six miles) west of the city’s historic center.

The mosque has already been the target of hate: a pig’s head was left on the doorstep last June during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Other mosques in Canada have been targeted with racist graffiti in recent months.

The shooting comes as Canada has vowed to open its arms to Muslims and refugees after US President Donald Trump’s controversial immigration ban Friday prompted travel chaos and outrage around the world.

– ‘Senseless violence’ –

People fleeing the mosque — where custom requires worshippers to remove their shoes during prayer — ran barefoot through the snow.

“They arrived in a panic,” said Louis-Gabriel Cloutier, the manager of a cafe across the street who watched worshippers fleeing the rampage.

Some took refuge at the cafe.

“I never thought that such a thing could happen,” said a man who frequents another of the city’s 10 mosques. He had ventured to the scene because “I know people who were inside.”

Ambulances treated the wounded at the scene.

Police reconstructing the events later questioned witnesses in a sports center near the mosque.

Trudeau issued a statement saying “we condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a center of worship and refuge.”

“Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, city and country,” he said.

“It is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence,” he added. “Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear.”

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said in a series of Twitter posts that the government was “mobilized to ensure the security of the people of Quebec.”

“Quebec categorically rejects this barbaric violence,” he wrote. “Solidarity with Quebec people of Muslim faith.”

Condemning what he called an “odious attack,” French President Francois Hollande said “it’s the spirit of peace and openness of the people of Quebec that the terrorists wanted to hit.”

Police stationed near the mosque told AFP that they had feared this type of attack “because it’s happening all over the world.”

“For us Muslims, Quebec and Canada had been a safe zone,” said Hamid Nadji, who learned of the shooting from a friend and rushed to the mosque area.

– Policy of compassion –

Canada will offer temporary residence permits to people stranded in the country as a result of Trump’s order, the immigration ministry said Sunday.

“Let me assure those who may be stranded in Canada that I will use my authority as minister to provide them with temporary residency if needed as we have done in the past,” Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen told a news conference.

Trump has suspended the arrival of all refugees to the United States for at least 120 days and barred entry for 90 days to people from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Although Hussen, who is of Somali origin, did not condemn the US measure, he stressed that Canada would continue to pursue an immigration policy based on “compassion” while also protecting the security of its citizens.

“We welcome those fleeing persecution, terror and war,” he said, echoing a welcoming Twitter post by Trudeau on Saturday.
According to the latest Canadian census, from 2011, one of five people in the country are foreign-born.

Canada has welcomed more than 39,670 Syrian refugees between November 2015 and early January 2017, according to government figures.

One million sign petition to cancel Trump’s UK state visit

15:01 Add Comment

US President Donald Trump / AFP PHOTO / DON EMMERT

A petition demanding Britain cancel a planned state visit by US President Donald Trump passed one million signatures on Monday, following outrage over his travel ban on mainly Muslim countries.

“Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US government, but he should not be invited to make an official state visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen,” the petition on parliament’s website says.

“Donald Trump’s well-documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales.”

Parliamentary petitions can be signed by anyone with a British postcode and those doing so are asked if they are a UK resident or citizen. Such petitions must be considered by lawmakers if they attract more than 100,000 signatures.
Last January parliament debated banning Trump from Britain following a petition signed by nearly 600,000 people, after the then White House candidate promised to drastically restrict US entry to people from Muslim countries if he became president.

Trump on Friday signed an executive order suspending the arrival of all refugees for at least 120 days, Syrian refugees indefinitely — and barring citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days.

Rohr can’t ignore real Eagles talent in Chinese League —Elegbede

07:09 Add Comment
As more Super Eagles like Odion Ighalo, Emmanuel Emenike and Nosa Igiebor prepare to join captain John Obi Mikel in the Chinese Super League, Coach Gernoit Rohr may well reconsider his position not to extend invitations to Nigerian players moving to China to play soccer.

Mikel’s move to Tiajin Teda at the start of this month, after more than a decade at Chelsea, set not a few tongues wagging. Left out of Chelsea by manager Antonio Conte since the season started in August, Mikel surprised many when he opted for China, given that offers came from Valencia and Marseille. His move was duly sanctioned by Coach Rohr, who said Mikel was guaranteed of his shirt in Eagles. But when Odion Ighalo considered going to China after suffering a slump in form at Watford, the Franco-German tactician warned the former Granada forward not to head for the far East because such would dim his chances to play for Eagles In what appears a clear case of double standard, Rohr’s position has been challenged by the Content Marketing Manager of StarTimes, Qasim Elegbede, who urged the coach to rescind his ban on Eagles stars going to China Speaking on this trending issue, Elegbede, a former sports journalist, argued that Coach Rohr cannot close his eyes to good Nigerian talents in the Chinese Super League because of the country where the league is holding. ‘’That is a generalised statement that a person like Rohr should not make. The example of Patrick Mboma is apt here. When he came to Nigeria to help Cameroon win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000, he was playing in the Japanese League, which at that time was nowhere near a top league. ‘’It is not wise for Rohr to say that whoever plays in China is not fit to play for the Super Eagles. I believe that if Rohr sees a good Nigeria talent in the Chinese League that he would not shut him out of the national team.

Gernot Rohr

‘’The truth of the matter is that the Chinese Super League offers the best competition for our players to become better in their trade. What is the use of staying on the bench of a team in Europe, wasting away, when you can play alongside top stars like Oscar, Lavezzi, Gervinho and Kalcuta’’, added Elegbede. Continuing, he said, ‘’the league in China has the capacity of improving our players performance because there are two World Cup winning coaches in the Chinese Super League and these two, Marcelo Lippi and Felipe Scolari, are coaches of high reputation, who our players will now have the chance to play against or even for, as the case may be’’. While justifying the crazy transfer spending of the Chinese Super League, Elegbede, who noted that StarTimes has the exclusive right to show the league in sub-sahara Africa, said, ‘’it is obvious because the Chinese want to develop their league and since they are not known for their prowess in football, they need to go to those who know to learn. The Chinese want to develop their league and they are passionate about football and have the resources to draw the best players to their league. ‘’The way to go about is to lure the big boys from Europe, South American and Africa to come and teach their boys how to play better football. The ultimate goal of the Chinese is to become a top football-playing nation. And make no mistake, when Chinese set their mind on something, they often achieve it’’, he added. Responding to a question on the disparity in the wages offered to foreign players and Chinese players and the sustainability of such, Elegbede said, ‘’It is an interesting model because the money being offered is mind-blowing but let’s not forget that about five years ago, that when the big teams from Europe wanted to do their pre-season, they often went to Asia, most times China because of the population and the purchasing power. ‘’I am not really surprised by the offer they are making because they have an economy that can sustain it. How long, I don’t know. And again, Chinese are not known for their strength in football and for you to bring the best legs to your league, then you need to pay through your nose. ‘’And they are not afraid to pay. It is good that we are starting with them very early because the projection is that it will become so big. We are happy to be the only station in sub-sahara Africa showing the Chinese League to Africa. ‘’It is good for Nigeria because John Obi Mikel, who is the captain of Nigeria is now playing in China and can be monitored by Nigerians to know if he deserves to continue leading the Eagles in the next round of 2018 World Cup qualifiers’’, added Elegbede. He said the cap on the number of foreigners, who can play for a team was to protect young Chinese players from being stifled out by their more illustrious counterparts from other countries. ‘’China is not known for its football prowess, so there was a need to protect these home players from being muscled out by their counterparts from Europe, Africa and America. It is not unique to China. At a time, the English Premier League did it. Even, the Germans did it. The Italians also did it. ‘’When something is at its early stage, you need to put such a cap to protect your local talents, otherwise you might end up killing the local talents. It must be noted that the objective for the Chinese is to develop their home talents through the injection of top quality players into their league’’.he added. Money in Chinese League ‘’The money is very big. Last year, they spent the most during the transfer window and this year, the trend has continued. We are showing the league to Nigerians and very soon, Nigerians will be going to China to watch the Chinese League live on our bill. Ultimately, if they get it right and they don’t often get it wrong, the Chinese League is going to be one of the biggest in the world. Players are in football because of the money they will get and China is ready to get the best with its money’’.

Buhari not radical enough to solve Nigeria’s problems – Balarebe Musa

06:52 Add Comment
The elderstatesman who initially refused to comment on some national issues, in a telephone conversation with Saturday Vanguard lamented that President Buhari was not different from his predecessor.

Said he: “The President is just like his predecessor. I ask you what is the remarkable difference between him and his predecessor. No fundamental difference. They all believe in the system based on self interest first, while public interest comes after their own interest is served. He is not radical enough to deal with the situation in Nigeria”.

*Balarabe Musa
He accused the govern-ment of conceding its leading role in economy to the private sector as well as folding its arm while watching the private sector determine what goes on, adding that this will lead the country to nowhere.

According to him, “Let us decide first what is the root cause of the problem of the economy. The root cause is the leading role of the private sector as opposed to the leading role of the state in the economy to ensure, peace, equality, justice, dignity of the human person and the progressive development of the country. Unless the leading role of the state is right, we cannot get things right. “With our experience over the years, the only viable solution to the state of the nation is socialist reconstruction of Nigeria starting with the leading role of the state in the economy. At the moment, the choice of the President and the Senate President is that the leading role of the economy is that of the Private sector which is wrong. As long as we continue with this, we will get no where”. He advised the President to immediately embark on social reconstruction of Nigeria, taking the leading role in the economy and bring about a system that places public interest first above every other interest.

Why Southern Kaduna crisis escalated – Makarfi

•Speaks on Dasuki, Buhari’s anti-corruption battle
•Says Abuja sponsorship of party in govt started in 2003

As the then governor of Kaduna state, Senator Ahmed Makarfi was credited with maintaining peace in Kaduna state because of his fair mindedness in treating all the tendencies in the state. When the PDP was thrown into leadership crisis, he was the unanimous choice as the chairman of the Caretaker Committee because he is seen as bridge builder and gentleman. Despite the fact the crisis in the party still lingers, he is well respected by even those who do not agree with his choice as caretaker committee chairman. In this interview with BEN AGANDE in Abuja, he speaks on a wide range of national issues, including the government’s fight against corruption. Excerpts.

You were the governor of Kaduna state for eight years and during that period, you were reputed to have maintained relative peace in that otherwise volatile state. In view of what is happening in Southern Kaduna at the moment, what do you think is responsible for this escalation of violence?

A number of reasons are responsible for what is happening now. The challenges that we had then were different from the challenge they have now. It is not as if there were no farmer/herdsmen clashes when we were in power. Even as a child, the problems were there but they were being managed at the community levels by the traditional rulers and the communities. The problem has become magnified because of the trans-border nomadic culture of the cattle rearers. The growing activism of host communities, especially the younger generation who may have been told one story or the other is a factor. Joblessness is another. But the problem became worse after the 2011 elections because there was election violence and reaction and counter reactions which reached the southern part of Kaduna state. The overwhelming numbers of the casualties then were the local Fulani people and their cattle. Most of them moved away. In my opinion, government was not too quick in addressing the matter. Though there was a sheikh Lemu committee which did an excellent job, government should have moved very quickly to get all people that were adversely affected, irrespective of their ethnic, cultural or religious persuasion, to sit down to make peace. Where government could come in to help out those who had lost everything, it should have come in so that people can rebuild their lives. Government should have ensured that people sat down to make peace as a community, as a people. This was not done until very, very late. By the time things were done, so much water had passed under the bridge. More mayhem here and there; attacks and counter attacks which made nonsense of the spirit of the recommendation of the Sheikh Lemu committee. It is only through round table sitting that multi-ethnic communities see wisdom. That way it may not be difficult in executing to execute recommendation of the Justice Lemu committee because there would be understanding.

Makarfi

Somehow, it is my opinion, based on what I hear and read, that there is this belief that government has taken side. I do not believe that it is government’s intention to take side when its citizens are being maimed and killed but of course, you can also send a wrong signal. It may not be what you intend to do but the body language and what you say can always create an impression. I believe a lot of things have gone in to the heart and minds of people to make them feel awkward. In this kind of situation, it is not to make matters worse but to try to find a solution. In my opinion, the path to finding a solution is the Abdulsalami Peace Committee. It is a committee of people of integrity, religious leaders are there, traditional rulers are there, and people with different backgrounds are there. The committee helped this country to transit from PDP government to APC government peacefully. They have proved themselves. Government and the people should give the Abdulsalami committee chance to broker peace. The only way they can broker peace is by bringing the communities together to talk amongst themselves. If you can make them sit around the table and look at each other and remember the good old days, I am absolutely sure they can come up with recommendations that can help government bring back peace and stability in that troubled area. The country seems to be move divided now than it was a few years ago. What in your opinion is responsible for this divisiveness? There are differences from place to place. If you take the issue in southern Kaduna, it is not the same with the issue in Zamfara because in Zamfara, it is purely criminal issue. In southern Kaduna, there is inter-ethnic, inter-religious and of course, there is economic reason also. So are the differences in Benue, Taraba, south East and South West. There are different reasons we have crises all over. It is a national problem and that is the reason we should not politicize everything. It is bringing the country down. Attempting to politicize every problem, the big and the small will make the government too relaxed thinking it is all politics. It is just like the Boko Haram crisis. Initially people thought it was all political and the government was relaxed. By the time it realized it was serious, it got out of hand. I think the current government, irrespective of party, whether state or central has tried to politicize a number of problems thereby allowing them to grow from small issue to large issues. That is why I keep saying that we need to put politics aside and come together and tackle the problems of the country. You were recently quoted as saying that the Peoples Democratic Party is a government in waiting. With the recent development in the party where several high level members of the party are defecting to the APC, do you still have confidence in your prediction? Absolutely. Remember there was a time when the PDP was in power and almost every politician moved to PDP. We know those who are moving now. They are few. The real time for movement is by the end of this year. People like to move when they are sure of certain things and by that time, PDP would have come out of its problems and maybe, the problems of other political parties may just be beginning. Let no body be laughing at what is happening to us. It is painful even if we lose one person. But who tells you that we may not get ten or hundred more in a few months to come? We will continue to urge all party men and women to be patient. We cannot guarantee that all of them will be patient but we also know that there are many more people that are talking to us from other parties and we will continue to talk with them. We believe the Tsunami movement will come and when they it comes, Nigerians will not be told what will happen in 2019. Do you think PDP is still a marketable brand? It is not for me to say. As chairman caretaker committee, I cannot have a personal opinion over such matter. There is the Jerry Gana committee, who are talking with people and even when they submit their report, there are still different organs that their report will go through. So, I cannot profess any personal opinion in respect of such matters. Whatever the party decides, I will go with it. Going back to Kaduna state, another issue that is generating tension is the issue of Shiite versus the state government. There was no major incidence during your tenure with the movement. What did you do? How were you able to navigate it? We engaged them. We were talking with them. They knew we had dos and donts. Of course you may find excesses sometimes but as a leader, it is not every excess that you take as an offence and begin to mete out punitive measures. You can end up making a mountain out of a molehill. That was the attitude we adopted and it worked. I cannot recall any major crisis we had with them throughout my eight years in office. I can’t also recall any major crisis they had with any group. We remained in constant talks and it served the purposes that we set out to achieve. Do you think government’s decision to ban them is justified? The matter is in court, so I would not want to comment on it. The court will determine whether the action of government was constitutional or not. One of the major planks of this government is the fight against corruption. What is your rating of this? We all subscribe to the principle of fighting corruption but we have kept on saying that it should be a fair fight. When you mention the $2.1Million Dasuki arms money which they say was diverted to PDP campaign, it about N800 Billion. If that is what it is, when you sum up from the charge sheet the figure you are charging them for diversion may not be up to one percent of the money for the purchase of arms. That means that 99% of the money was used appropriately. And if it was not used appropriately, it was not politicians that used it. Maybe it was public servants or the armed forces. But all that you hear and read about is what has to do with the politicians. But even then, even if it was a kobo that was diverted it is wrong. But my problem, which I have stated repeatedly, is that 99%of those people who are being called could not have known the source of that money. After all, it was not in 2015 that the centre started sending money to the states for elections. From 2003, money was being sent to states for each election. It was nothing new. It was the norm. None of these people were in a position to know where the person taking the money took it from. For anybody to then look at them as criminals, it is unfair. It is like leaving the master and going for the messenger. It is quite unfair. If a wrong has been done, we should look at who has done the wrong and how to handle it. “Let by gone be by gone” is a common saying. For people who were innocent political actors to be getting the heat is not fair. Secondly, those of us who are not in office, it is easy to say we are corrupt and should be prosecuted. But for those in office, it is almost impossible. It is just a matter of time. Everybody must leave office one day. Those in office now, even if there are allegations now they may be swept under the carpet. But matters like these never end. Look at the Halliburton case; look at the case involving Dan Ettete and co. We should not politicize the fight against corruption. As a matter of fact, and this is my personal opinion: our PDP senators should not oppose the confirmation of Magu because continuing to oppose him will be over politicizing the case and injuring the institution. If they have reservation on some of his procedures, they should take up such issues with him so that he too can become a better person to do his work more professionally and in tune with the law. As chairman of the opposition party, I am saying that we should not politicize this matter. But the senate decision was based on a report by the DSS which indicted him. Who is superior between the president and the DSS? The president said he has had a second look at their report and that he wants the man. Will you say no because his messenger said he is a bad man?

See President Buhari allegedly in new London photos

By Anthony Ogbonna An alleged new photos of President Muhammadu Buhari in London have emerged.

In the photo, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state is seen to have visited him with other delegates.

Recall that speculations had emerged claiming the President was critically ill while the most unpopular ones insinuated that President Buhari may have even died of the illness. However, the Presidency refuted the rumours saying it was false. The presidency had equally told Nigerians that President Buhari is hale and hearty.

Recall also that President Buhari had gone to the UK on a 10 days vacation, from where, according to the presidency, he would undergo a medical check-up. However, when rumours of his death filtered into the country, a first photo of Mr. President was released to Nigerians. In the photo, President Buhari was seen watching a news programme, from his London room, about the goings-on in Nigeria. This new photos further prove to Nigerians that Mr. President is indeed alive, hale and hearty. Similarities between the first photo and the second set of photos however matched same location, indicating the President is really enjoying his leave abroad and not in any U.K hospital as claimed by some quarters. The President not being in any hospital in the U.K was further attested to by the Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina. The similarities in the first and second photos are with the sofa, flag, curtains, the colour of the wall and center carpet.

West Ham seal Snodgrass swoop

Robert Snodgrass

West Ham signed Scotland winger Robert Snodgrass in a £10.2 million ($12 million) deal from Hull on Friday.
Snodgrass agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract to become West Ham’s second January signing after their swoop for Southampton defender Jose Fonte.

With Hammers playmaker Dimitri Payet still trying to engineer a move back to his former club Marseille, Snodgrass would be a ready-made replacement for the France international.

Snodgrass could make his West Ham debut in Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.
“I’m delighted because this is a massive club with great tradition,” Snodgrass said.

“This is the sort of club which speaks for itself, the fans who come here and support week-in week-out and moving to and selling out this new stadium is terrific and I want to be part of it.

“The owners and the manager are trying to build something here and I just can’t wait to get started. I feel this is a club with real ambition, with the new stadium, great players and a manager of his calibre at Premier League level.

“The club has had a few good weeks with results and if I can add to that, great. I’m just looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting started.”
